Chill (from The War / The Power Of Music – 2017)
Opening with a blast of icy synth, Chill soon moves into a skittering verse that combines an unusual rhythmic structure with bursts of funk brass. Overall, this is one of EXO’s most percussive tracks, playing around with tempo and stylistic shifts. Chill is never one song or one genre for more than a few moments, and that makes it both frustrating and beguiling. Its post-chorus chant is the most laid-back part of the equation, dropping the instrumental to focus on waves of layered vocals. It all builds to a blistering rap verse that takes us to the song’s climax. At just over three minutes, Chill feels more like an interesting aside than an essential album track, but it’s rare for mainstream K-pop to play around with composition this much.

So I just wrote on “Diamond” that every SM album has an experimental track, this is the one for this particular album. I don’t think it works as well as “Diamond”. It is more a collection of a sketch book of musical ideas than a song. I don’t know how they would make a dance or perform this one live.

They did perform this live on their last concert, but it was less a dance and more of them just having fun.
