Going Crazy (from The War / The Power Of Music – 2017)
Opening with a frantic synth loop and dramatic sweeps of strings, Going Crazy promises drama to come. And though the track never fully lives up to that mood, its creeping tempo gives the song an anxious air. I wouldn’t necessarily call this a dance track, but its aggressive production never really lets up. I love when it fractures for a moment to make way for a daring electronic arpeggio or warped vocal ad-lib. In this way, Going Crazy keeps the listener constantly off-balance. The track takes a leisurely dip during verse two that blunts some of the momentum, but its layered chorus brings everything together.

“Going Crazy” is one of my absolute favorite b sides from Exo!
There are so many K-pop songs about going crazy or obsessing over an ex, but I think this one nails it like no other. So many of the synth and instrumental choices reflect frenetic moods shifting at the drop of a hat, and Exo’s emotional tone in their delivery is fantastic. The lyrics show they intensely love and hate their ex at the same time, and I can hear the hurt and the hope warring in their performance.
Lastly, I think the outro starting at 3:25 is brilliant. The siren like synth fades out until it becomes indistinguishable and the piano plays to a devastated final chord. It’s like the speaker is drained, left cold and hollow after this emotional outburst. If a song can paint an emotional picture for me like that, especially when it’s primarily sung in a foreign language, it gets a lot of respect from me.

Along with Gravity, this is the magnum opus of EXO, for me at least.
