Wait (from Love Shot – 2018)

Wait feels like a song that belongs on one of EXO’s holiday albums. Over a subdued, acoustic guitar instrumental, the track brings unique texture to the group’s standard r&b balladry. It suffers from appearing so early on its repackaged album, as the energy level is quite low compared to the tracks around it. But as always, EXO’s incredible harmonies save the day. What Wait lacks in ambition, it makes up for in warmth. Chanyeol’s deeper timbre is especially well-suited to this sound, even if he only gets to rattle off a few lines. Wait is more of a whisper than a scream, but I still would have loved to hear one satisfying power note towards the climax.
