Ooh La La La (from Don’t Mess Up My Tempo / Love Shot – 2018)
When Ooh La La La was released last year, it was heralded as the “sexy track” from EXO’s Don’t Mess Up My Tempo album. While this approach no doubt satisfied fans looking for a more sultry concept, I’ve always found the actual song to be pretty middle-of-the-road. It has an appealing atmosphere, driven by the layered vocals that forge the chorus, but the melody feels too on the nose for me. Maybe it’s the repeated “ooh la la la” refrain. The verses creep forward with an understated confidence and the guys deliver the track with undeniable flair, but Ooh La La La never really goes anywhere.

The melody is average for me, but what elevates the track is the guitar, and I love the underwater effect put on some of it. Xiumin’s outro at the end is also a great example of the ease and confidence Exo has at this point in their career.
