Oasis (from Don’t Mess Up My Tempo / Love Shot – 2018)

Oasis’s opening line is arresting, emerging with a palpable tenseness as if the melody had finally caught up to you after a long pursuit. From here, trap influences form a disappointing instrumental backdrop, but they’re countered by an evocative, minimalist pre-chorus and a striking, chanted hook. The use of synth strings is especially effective, extending the agitated nature of Oasis’s initial verse. However, the song misses the opportunity to burst into something even more impressive. It constantly feels on the verge of morphing into a secondary chorus or dynamic bridge, but finishes with more of a whimper than a bang.
