EXO Exist: In-Depth Album Review – Regret It

EXO - ExistEXO are one of my “K-pop A-Z” artists, and that means I’ve committed to write about anything they release in perpetuity. So, here are my thoughts about every track from their new Exist album!

1. Cream Soda // 2. Regret It // 3. Hear Me Out // 4. Private Party // 5. Cinderella // 6. No Makeup // 7. Love Fool // 8. Another Day // 9. Let Me In

REGRET IT

Exist is primarily an R&B album, and Regret It is the first big indication of that. After a jarring introduction from Chanyeol, the guitar-led beat drops and has nice grit to it. I’m less enthused by the instrumental’s more muted elements, and wish the producers would fully commit to the oomph of the groove they establish.

While its chorus is pretty simple, spikes of vocal drama provide a suitable centerpiece. A post-chorus breakdown is very welcome, as filtered chants meld with that funky guitar. Regret It weakens every time it strays from this core sound palette, making me long for a beefier arrangement that transformed this into an uptempo standout. Fortunately, Regret It culminates in a robust finale that delivers the big vocal blend I’ve always loved from EXO.

I know I’m giving Regret It a lower rating than Cream Soda, but with a day of listening behind me I actually prefer this track. It feels more focused and less grating.

  1. I’m not quite as obsessed with it as Cloud 9 or Ya Ya Ya, EXO’s other tracks with Dem Jointz, but it is a highlight on this album for sure. I think it’s a grower!

  2. I love the chorus a whole lot, and when it sticks to that groove it’s great. I wish I liked the rest of it just as much. It definitely didn’t jar me as much on a second listen though, so maybe it will grow!

  3. R&B is just really not the genre for me, but I can appreciate this song. They picked a style and made a solid song out of it. With their vocal power and control, they pull it off very well.
