EXO Exist: In-Depth Album Review – Another Day

EXO - ExistEXO are one of my “K-pop A-Z” artists, and that means I’ve committed to write about anything they release in perpetuity. So, here are my thoughts about every track from their new Exist album!

1. Cream Soda // 2. Regret It // 3. Hear Me Out // 4. Private Party // 5. Cinderella // 6. No Makeup // 7. Love Fool // 8. Another Day // 9. Let Me In

ANOTHER DAY

This one’s got a slightly more off-kilter groove than the tracks immediately preceding it, and earns bonus points for that. I really enjoy the percussion during the chorus. It could have been expanded upon to create an even more engaging soundscape.

But — and I apologize for repeating myself — Another Day‘s melodies just aren’t there for me. EXO do a lot of impressive singing and give us a couple great vocal runs, but it’s all in service to a threadbare tune that instantly fades from memory. There’s not enough to chew on here, which unfortunately describes the album as a whole. It comes way too close to feeling like background music, which is not something I would have expected from EXO’s discography.

  1. I’m kind of surprised to say that the pre-release singles are still grabbing me, but the rest of the album, though beautifully arranged and sung, kind of feels like one long song to me. I’ve actually taken to using it as wind-down music before bed. Which is nice, but not something I’ve have done with any EXO album before. I don’t regret pre-ordering, but it IS going to be elegant background music for me right now.

  2. It’s sad that “Cream Soda” is the highest rated song on the album, which means there’s not a single buried treasure pick on this album. I still have hope for a repackage, but if not, then hopefully after Sehun enlists, followed by Kai and Sehun finishing their service in the future, maybe EXO will come back with a stronger album.

  3. This is the one song that doesn’t work for me. I liked 7/9. This one just doesn’t go anywhere. This song could play for like 15 minutes and I doubt anyone would notice. It just sits in the background and never attempts to be noticed. Its like me in crowds of people.

  4. Looking at the bright side, “Regret It” is a huge grower for me. I never thought I would like a Dem Jointz-produced track from this year but here we are. The powerful chorus gets me every time.

By the way, has “Hear Me Out” grown on you?

  5. They have beautiful voices but I cannot see myself liking this as much as I think I should?! It’s weird because I don’t think that the cd is bad (some of the lyrics are silly but that’s ok, it’s pop music after all), but they are so strong vocally that I thought I would be blown away with this cb.
I think I enjoyed Kai’s recent album more than I enjoyed this.

btw I just saw a video of them singing live on YouTube and goddammit, how incredible they are, I miss the old songs.

  6. This is the only track on the album that I actively dislike (the rest are all on the like side of neutral, even if I don’t love them), and it’s all because of the distorted bass. To me, it grates like sandpaper, and the rest of the song doesn’t really do enough to make me look past that.
