Surprise Party (from Nu ABO – 2010)

With a glossy 90’s r&b beat and wisps of strings and keys, Surprise Party’s instrumental is its greatest asset. The entire thing harnesses a head-nodding groove, ornamenting the track in all the right places with musical flourishes. But, for a song called Surprise Party, you might except this to have more bite. The melody feels a little throwaway – especially the light, unassuming chorus. But, the girls give a bravura performance, belting it out with far more conviction than a pop trifle like this really deserves. With that said, this is an awfully sleepy party!
