Pinocchio (Danger) (from Pinocchio / Hot Summer – 2011)
I feel like repackage Hot Summer often steals the limelight from Pinocchio, but this track is far more quintessentially f(x). The stomping electro beat takes no prisoners, nudged along by the group’s rhythmic vocal. The pre-chorus unveils a gloriously staccato drive before segueing into an equally catchy, equally funky chorus. This isn’t a particularly melodic song, but its hooks are sharp. This may be sing-talk at its most sing-talkiest, yet the entire track is designed around this approach.
Every element in Pinocchio’s arsenal is forged to build upon the song’s indelible groove. It has an alien-like texture, abrasive but never harsh. Touches of rhythm guitar and bright, retro synth give it splashes of color, coupled with an exciting bridge that vaults the energy to a different level. This is the kind of girl group dance track that only SM Entertainment could produce.

Maybe it’s the affection I have for Monrose’ version because I heard it first but f(x)’s hot summer was a song that I didn’t mind but also didn’t love so I agree that Pinocchio is the one that stands out as them to me.
Meanwhile, I’m hoping ‘Rude Love’ is coming next for ‘R’???

This is the song that made me a Meu. I thought f(x) was cool before Pinocchio, but I was done for once they released this. There is still no group out there like them, in my opinion. They carved their own space in the K-Pop sphere, in a way that felt effortless. They were so unaffected by the musical landscape around them and just did what felt right for them. It’s songs like Pinocchio or Rum Pum Pum Pum that feel really f(x) to me. Not in your face or bombastic, just powerful lurching beats that don’t demand your attention, but are confident in knowing they’ll get it anyway.
