K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Beautiful Goodbye

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

Beautiful Goodbye (from Pinocchio (Danger) / Hot Summer – 2011)

Opening with the chiming of bells and a dramatic English-language testament from Amber, Beautiful Goodbye stakes its claim on emotional resonance. Its slick mid-tempo beat is firmly entrenched in the mid-to-late 90’s, and gives way to a surging chorus that takes great advantage of the girls’ vocal blend. While the verses play things a little hesitant for my taste, that hook really brings the song home. I love the symphonic backing, which supplies just enough heft to give the melody real impact. A volley of well-placed vocal ad-libs, coupled with cathartic guitar, really send the track off on a high.

  1. Yes, this is the obligatory softer midtempo album cut of this type. For what it is, it is well done. It is also very straight forward structure Verse-Chorus-V-C-Bridge-C-C-Outro, and all sung, so it doesn’t task the listener with constantly changing perspectives, like 2nd verse half time or rap. That structure with a fine vocal performance make it easy and pleasing to listen to.

My ears are not fully working yet this morning, the coffee hasn’t kicked in, but there is a very interesting stealth key change between the verses and chorus right at 0:56 with that last sung verse note, and then back to the original key for the verse at 1:24 with the piano chord. I believe the Bridge is in the chorus key. (Where is ReacttoK Kevin when I need him?!)

Good song choice for today. Rest in peace, Sulli.

  2. Gorgeous track, and an excellent example of knowing exactly when to deploy harmonies to build and release tension. The suspended chords in the verses and major-key turn for the chorus are standout moments for me.

Also, I just clocked why Airplane was seemingly skipped – do you stand by your original rating of 9, Nick? Wild that it’s been longer since your initial review than it had been since the track was originally released!

    • Yeah I was wondering about that too! I personally think that Airplane could be their best song, or at least one of the more representative of their talents and sound.

      • Yes please! Re-review it! Its my favorite F(x) song!

Actually I was looking through your completed reviews for f(x) on the A-Z list, and its quite short isn’t it. I was actually quite surprised that it was only three song long, so this Grand Revue is well overdue. Hurrah!

  3. I love their vocals on this track so much. Never fails to bring up some nostalgic emotions along with Ending Page.

Also I just realized in a matter of days I finally get to hear your thoughts on the eclectic JP release Cowboy after all these years. I’ve been waiting for this!
