Gangsta Boy (from Pinocchio / Hot Summer – 2011)
Taking an old-school hip-hop approach, Gangsta Boy unveils a quirky sing-talk style for most of its verses. As expected from its era, the chorus opts for a generous dose of stylistic autotune. I think the song could do without that touch, and a greater focus on its playful, percussive production. Gangsta Boy’s sing-song melodies stay just short of cloying, but their throwback nature can be a lot of fun. There are elements of both 60’s and 80’s era pop at play here, filtered through a uniquely K-pop touch. With that said, the track could stand to be at least thirty seconds shorter. There’s just not much to it, and things become pretty repetitive by the end.

This song doesn’t work for me, It does remind me of a fond memory of my cousin when she was young, dancing and singing her dance recital song enthusiastically for us, all kitted out as a cowgirl. The refrain was “MY PONY BOY!” as screamed by a five year old who was enthralling the captive relatives in the living room. She followed it up the next year with a stirring rendition of “Barbie Girl”, it was fantastic. Little cousin would also have done a exhilarating rendition of this song in like a neon sequin miniskirt and high ponytail or something. Woulda coulda shoulda.
