Stand Up! (from Pinocchio / Hot Summer – 2011)

Stand Up is the kind of cheery girl group song you’d expect of most K-pop acts. It actually feels a little more suited to the Japanese market than Korea. The melody is bright and infectious, if a little cloying at times. The standout here is the rhythmic backing track, with melds guitar and synths for an enjoyably groovy instrumental. I love the acoustic guitar breakdown wedged right in the song’s center. Though not unusual in many genres of music, it feels somewhat novel for K-pop. With that said, Stand Up is easily a minute too long. After awhile, it just kind of spins its wheels. That’s the thing with saccharine melodies. A little goes a long way.
