Lollipop (from Pinocchio / Hot Summer – 2011)
Given this incredible combination of talents, you’d think that Lollipop would be one of the crown jewels within f(x)’s discography. I mean, what better act to duet with them than SHINee? Yet, the track is a little underwhelming. I love its punchy beat, but there’s not a lot more to Lollipop than that. It’s a relatively flat line all the way through, as energetic and fun as that line may be. The best moments happen when the two groups intertwine. Key’s second verse rap, backed by f(x)’s vocals, is a real treat. But, the song is in desperate need of a melodic chorus to counter the oft-repeated “lollipop” chant. Funny enough, these are the exact same criticisms I have about 2NE1 and Bigbang’s Lollipop released a couple of years prior. Two awesome combinations… two songs that needed a bit more oomph.

~ Rest in peace, Sulli. We will forever be grateful for the incredible music and spirit you left behind ~
I honestly love this song so much, but I’m willing to chalk it down to the novelty of hearing every voice from my 2 all-time favorite groups on a single track. Even if it’s nothing mindblowing I love the quirky, sassy energy and it’s catchy enough.
Naturally I wish we could’ve gotten another f(SHINee) track down the line after both had cemented themselves as powerhouse groups; can you imagine the sheer talent?

Have you ever heard the Chinese version of Lollipop that they did with boy group MIC? I’ve always found it to be my favorite of the Lollipop versions –

The ‘lollipop oh lollipop’ chant is incredibly similar to the one in BIGBANG & 2NE1’s Lollipop – also a collab between a big boygroup and girlgroup from the same agency. Interesting!
This is one of the rare cases where I prefer a YG track over an SM one, though not by much. I really like both and I’m not really too bothered the repetitive chanting.
