K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Pretty Girl

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

Pretty Girl (from Pink Tape – 2013)

Pretty Girl manages to make distortion sound a little bluesy, even as its ticking time bomb of an instrumental assaults us with frantic hi-hats and a hearty clap. The verses are comparatively reserved, but build into a mammoth pre-chorus that brilliantly sets up the central hook. I love how rhythmic this chorus is, utilizing a call-and-response approach to highlight the interplay between the percussion and vocals. Amber’s rap is quite goofy, but the song benefits from a light touch to counter its heavy stomp. Unlike its title, this isn’t a quintessential “pretty girl” of a pop song, but its bombastic charm is all f(x).

  1. Those Luna pre-choruses are all kinds of amazing. She’s a powerhouse and I’m so glad she got to release a solo mini-album at least.
