K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Kick

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

Kick (from Pink Tape – 2013)

The Pink Tape album is full of interesting textures, and Kick unveils its aggressive electronic assault immediately. It’s an abrasive track, melding hard-hitting rap with all manner of synth samples. The pre-chorus slows things down for a soaring bit of melody that never really resolves. True to form, Kick’s chorus is as brash and tumultuous as its verses. I think a contrasting tone would have helped here, as the track is almost too experimental for its own good. Still, there are plenty of moments to appreciate. The production during the bridge is simply bonkers, coming across like the EDM version of banging on pots and pans. Kick won’t be for everyone, but it certainly makes an impression.
