Step (from Pink Tape – 2013)
Step is the militant club anthem f(x) were born to deliver. It has personality for days, throbbing over brassy synths and distorted electronics. Much of the melody is targeted at the same endpoint, giving the verses and pre-chorus a droning quality that’s actually quite effective. This casts the perfect build-up to a dynamic chorus, which brings a greater sense of melodic diversity while still remaining incredibly rhythmic. Step even makes room for a dramatic bridge. Satisfying power notes bring a shot of dynamics to the track before we crash back into the brisk, multi-pronged hook. Like the best of f(x)’s material, it’s a little off-the-wall, yet pulled together by the force of the girls’ charisma.
