K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Goodbye Summer (ft. D.O.)

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

Goodbye Summer (ft. D.O.) (from Pink Tape – 2013)

Certain summer songs succeed on a sense of wistfulness, and Goodbye Summer nails that sentiment. The track is little more than strumming guitar and airy harmonies, but its simplicity works. This is a unit track with Amber, Luna and Krystal — and they’re paired with EXO’s D.O. Unsurprisingly, Goodbye Summer sounds more like an EXO b-side than f(x), jettisoning their experimental nature for something more vocal-oriented. The track builds to a satisfying series of high notes during its climax, as the instrumental swells with added symphonic elements. It’s a welcome break from the aural madness that permeates much of the Pink Tape album.
