Toy (from Pink Tape – 2013)
It’s not easy to stand out within the adventurous Pink Tape album, but I’ve always found Toy to be a particular highlight. I adore the fade-in that opens the track, making the chanted hook that follows all the more impactful. The instrumental is aggressive in the best way, bludgeoning listeners over the head during the verses before smoothing out for the propulsive chorus. Toy could have gone completely off the rails, but its disparate elements somehow forge into one dynamic whole. The heavy dubstep breakdown is perhaps the only real misstep, but it’s buoyed by a brilliant strings sample that gives Toy a cinematic flair.
