Red Light (from Red Light – 2014)
Though I recognize I’m in the minority, Red Light is relatively low on my personal list of favorite f(x) title tracks. I find it an easier song to appreciate than to fully embrace. But to be fair, I think that’s exactly what Red Light seeks to accomplish. It’s a combative single, tense and stuffed to the brim with distorted electronics. Its scuzzy electro skeleton offers the basis for a track in constant motion. What begins as a frenzied dose of SM Entertainment hip-hop soon opens into a breathless ascent as we hit the pre-chorus.
In further contrast, Red Light’s chorus is militant and sharp. An aggressive battle cry introduces this stomping segment. The girls sneer their way through the hook, which comes across as a grimy alternative to agency-mates SNSD’s more effusive material. Meanwhile, Red Light’s bombastic bridge is exactly what you’d expect from SM Entertainment, raising the song’s drama to a theatrical crescendo before the experimental elements crash in once more.

There are more straight forward songs on this album, but the single had to be Red Light, in my opinion. One of their most complex, hectic, experimental songs. Selling it as well as they did is really an achievement the girls should be proud of.
Nick, could I ask which f(x) album is your personal favorite? I think I’ve accepted I can’t settle on a single one.

I think he mentioned in his “Top 10 f(x) Title Tracks” post that Pink Tape was his favorite? I could be wrong

You know, I’ve always said it was Pink Tape but I’m not super married to that idea. For me, Pink Tape, 4 Walls and Red Light are all super close.
I’m curious to see what the cumulative album ratings will be once I’m done with these A-Z reviews. I may just base my new “favorite” off of that!

THE f(x) title track to me – so completely them but in a very sleek sophisticated way and filled with lots of great moments for everyone that were really great. it was a thrill to hear the first time and has remained so ever since.

One of my favorite f(x) songs.
Not related, but what are your thoughts on this list?

I’ve never even heard the vast majority of those songs. But given how busy K-pop and J-pop keep me, that’s no surprise.
With that said, Back Door is an odd choice for K-pop inclusion…

I usually don’t care about these lists but seeing Chris in the first place grabbed my attention. After listening to some of these songs I think my initial idea of what the list would be was unfortunately pretty fair.
Now it made me go back to Christine and the Queens’ La Vita Nuova EP (and MV) and it was definitely one of the highlights of the pop music this year. I’ve seen them live in one of the very few concerts I’ve ever been to and they are a great artist, you can feel the importance of the word “dance” in their music and their knowledge of music (I mean, you just have to look at their musical influences to understand that).
That was my annual French music promotion, if you have 15 minutes I recommend Nick or anyone here to check the 15 minutes Vita Nuova MV, even if you don’t like it I don’t think it will be a waste of time

I respect the song for its boldness. The bridge is absolutely stunning, too.
