Butterfly (from Red Light – 2014)
In many ways, Butterfly (나비) begins like so many tracks from SM Entertainment history. Its core synth stomp has been popular with the agency since the mid-00’s, but f(x) soon take it in a different direction with Butterfly’s airy, near-psychedelic chorus. This segment has always reminded me strongly of producer William Orbit’s late-90’s/early-00’s work with artists like All Saints. There’s an ambient quality to some parts of the instrumental, but any worries of Butterfly becoming overly fussy are jettisoned once you become absorbed in that widescreen melody.

Yeah I think this is one of the most dated-sounding tracks on the Red Light album, but that melody end up taking it to the next level.
Besides, the contrast between the sweetness of this chorus and the sonic assault of MILK and Rainbow works wonders.
And those Luna vocals in the bridge and middle 8! (I feel like I could say this about half their discography)

There was a time when SM went through a stomp stomp phase. Stomp stomp in the percussion, deep bass, chorus brings in distorted synth chords, perhaps a fairy light Fairlight high synth hook. This one brings to mind Super Junior’s “Opera” stomp stomp song which recently reappeared on my youtube autofeed again (which post-dates this song, but as another example from SM).

Its alright. Its a good dance around your room song, punching the air and waving your arms around with the hey-a-yay-a-yeah’s in the chorus. This slow 1 2 3 4 song is easy to vogue to.
Rating is a bit high for me, maybe about 8. (High 8’s and up means I will play it for my sisters, 8 means I play it for myself.)

This one always sounded like something that would be on Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese album so I can’t help but love it.
I always thought Red Light was an incredible album, maybe a song or two away from 4 Walls perfect, but I (blasphemously) rank it above Pink Tape.
