Rainbow (from Red Light – 2014)
Rainbow assaults the listener right from its first moment. This is noisy EDM at its most frantic, utilizing synth yelps as a through-line while the instrumental twists itself in distorted directions. The production is consistently harsh, whether than be in the form of rumbling bass, clobbering percussion or throbbing electronics. Depending on your tolerance for this level of aural madness, you’ll either be charmed or simply come away with a headache. Luckily, there’s an oasis of pop melody at Rainbow’s core, which contrasts the blistering vocal that bookends the track.

~ Rest in peace, Sulli. We will forever be grateful for the incredible music and spirit you left behind ~
As can be judged from my opinions on a lot of NCT songs, my tolerance for aural madness is relatively low. Some of the melody in here redeems it for me but not enough to listen to it again.

I love this, it reminds me of M.I.A!

That is a VERY good comparison. Wow… it’s been awhile since I listened to M.I.A — or even heard her name!

Yeah, I think she more or less quit music back in 2016 (with the exception of some collaboration here and there).
I’d say her “Bad Girls” was definitely a blueprint for some hip-hop based k-pop songs back in the day (HyunA, CL…), but this f(x) song is maybe the only one I know that I can see indebted to her noisier tracks!
