K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Paper Heart

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Paper Heart (from Red Light – 2014)

Putting a cap on the adventurous Red Light album, Paper Heart is an extremely refreshing closer. Driven by plucked guitar (or ukulele?), the verses are light and relaxing. This sets up the stomping, sing-along chorus in perfect fashion. Paper Heart isn’t an ambitious or complex pop song, but its well-calibrated hooks ensure that it goes down easy. It’s the kind of track that just makes you feel happy. You can imagine it being a real fun standout in a concert setting. And though we didn’t know it at the time, its breezy sound previews some of the styles Amber would pursue with her own solo work in the coming years.

  1. Taylor Swift is shaking! There’s just no week spots on this album. Summer Lover + Paper Heart work beautifully as closers after all that Dracula madness.
