K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – 4 Walls

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

4 Walls (from 4 Walls – 2015)

I often wonder how I would have responded to 4 Walls had it been released before SHINee’s View. This song was originally meant for the guys, but it fits f(x) like a glove. Yet, I’m of the mind that View is a far more dynamic track, so even though 4 Walls is very strong (and a firm fan favorite), it can’t help but succumb to the comparison.

Still, the slinky deep house style is exactly what f(x) needed at the time. Showing off their new configuration as a quartet, the track has a sophisticated sound that becomes quite hypnotic as the track goes on. I wish the verses harnessed a more idiosyncratic groove, but that percolating chorus makes up for any misgivings I might have. The second verse gives Amber a great spotlight, while the pre-choruses thrive with a sense of restrained power. How fitting that this – the last real f(x) title track – is also the last entry in this K-pop A-Z feature. Even though there were drips and drabs of music still to come, this feels like the group’s rightful swan song, going out on a high.

  1. I agree. I don’t exactly see all the hype around it but regardless of that, it is still a great song. Is this the end of your F(X) reviews? It has been a delight to read and I’m glad you chose to dive into this group.

  2. I really love 4 Walls, even though there are arguably stronger songs down the tracklist. That bridge + last chorus is a moment!

Thank you for this series, Nick! f(x) are my absolute favorite k-pop group, and the first one I always lead people who I want to get into k-pop to.
Remembering every one of their songs has been a total delight!

I hope the girls are proud of all the wonderful music they’ve left us. Thank you Sulli, Amber, Luna, Victoria, Krystal.

  3. This single and the 4 Walls album came out on my birthday and it was the best possible gift that year honestly. I remember being so excited I just held a solo dance party in my room listening through the tracklist lol.

This A-Z really made 2020 a little bit better so thanks, Nick!

  4. Awesome song. The comparison with View really is unavoidable- the tracks are so similar that I end up blending them in my head and start singing the chorus of View when 4 Walls is playing.
