Deja Vu (from 4 Walls – 2015)
Deja Vu is all about texture. Its synth backbone has a retro 8-bit appeal – fizzy and scuzzy but undeniably cool. This continues into the catchy pre-chorus, which utilizes a brighter synth note to distinguish itself. Based on the instrumental alone, Deja Vu has potential to come across as too angular, but the production is countered by a series of warm melodies. The verses are incredibly catchy and strangely familiar, while the chorus is a pure headrush of pop bliss. This is the kind of track where every single moment is a hook, yet they all hold together to form one cohesive song. That’s a tricky balance to pull off.

The three-track run of Glitter, Deja Vu and X is one of my favorites on any kpop album, especially in terms of the instrumental textures like you mentioned here. They’re each quirky and “crunchy” and fun in their own ways while also being supremely catchy. Man I miss f(x)….
