K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – X

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

X (from 4 Walls – 2015)

Continuing the retro grooves that fuel most of the 4 Walls album, X brings us back to 80’s electro-funk in great style. The gurgling instrumental is immensely appealing, and offers a playground for the girls to stretch their vocals in a series of charismatic turns. The entire track has a brittle feeling, similar to Prince singles like Kiss. X’s melody isn’t quite as dynamic, but it has the same slinky construction. And though its chorus is as simple as they get, that brevity allows for funky instrumental touches like splashes of brass and guitar. This is a genre I tend to adore, so it’s no surprise that X is yet another highlight of f(x)’s b-sides.

    • It’s been interesting looking back, because I think you could be right! I don’t know that it’s my absolute favorite, but it’s just so damn cohesive.

I’m going to add the ratings to the “album reviews” page next week and I’m curious to see how it all shakes out!
