When I’m Alone (from 4 Walls – 2015)
With a co-writing credit from Carly Rae Jepsen (!), you might expect When I’m Alone to be an upbeat bubblegum pop song. Instead, this glistening, synth-fueled slow burn caps off the 4 Walls album with a reflective atmosphere. With that said, Alone still has plenty of pep in its step. Its chorus ups the tempo considerably, buoying the hook with a wall-of-sound instrumental that continues to grow as we enter the second verse. In contrast, the chorus has an almost dissonant melody, melding the girls’ warm vocal blend to a refrain that descends when you’d expect it to explode. The result catches you off guard and further adds to Alone’s appeal.

~ Rest in peace, Sulli. We will forever be grateful for the incredible music and spirit you left behind ~
f(x) singing a CRJ masturbation-themed bop is one of my favorite k-pop funny facts! (Long live to E•MO•TION, the gift that kept on giving and one of the best pop albums of the last decade.)
I love the girls’ vocals on this song.

I always loved this song because it’s a great way to end the 4Walls album!
I always felt it was a counterpart to Cool World by Red Velvet that was released on the same year.

F(x) really have some a-grade albums! Personally, I feel 4 Walls is the third best F(x) album, with Red Light and Pink Tape just about competing with each other without a definitive winner.
