Being the current bias group of The Bias List has its advantages, and just like their big brother group Infinite, Golden Child are going to get the full-album review treatment. (Plus, back in the summer when it seemed like Golcha was never going to come back, I promised on twitter to run this feature!)
So for the next few days, I’ll be offering my thoughts (and ratings) on every one of Re-boot’s tracks.
1. Re-boot // 2. Wannabe // 3. Lately // 4. Compass // 5. No Matter What // 6. A Song For Me // 7. Spring Again // 8. She’s My Girl // 9. Our Heaven // 10. Fantasia // 11. Don’t Run Away // 12. Go Together
GO TOGETHER
For me, the undisputed king of Golden Child ballads is still last year’s All Day. But, Go Together comes pretty close. Apart from Joochan’s solo, this is Re-boot’s only real ballad, and it’s a unit track featuring Jaehyun, Jibeom and Bomin. Other than Jibeom, they’re not the members I would’ve expected to deliver a song like this, but the pairing works wonders.
Right off the bat, Go Together hits us with Bomin singing more than one line! And, he’s performing in a comfortable register! Honestly, this is kind of a revelation. No one else in Golcha has a voice that sounds close to his, and I really think it’s been wasted up until this point.
When it comes to pop ballads, I’ve really got to feel the drama. The song has to build to something — one of those big, confetti-drop moments.. Go Together does a good job at this, beginning as a quiet, piano-led track but adding orchestration as the melody blooms. There are some nice harmonies throughout, and the trio of distinct voices blend well together. I love the chorus on this one. It’s measured but stirring in an understated way. Go Together’s finale builds to some of Re-boot’s most ornate moments as a string section fades in to support some satisfying vocal ad-libs. I’ll always prefer dance tracks to ballads, but this hits all the marks I look for in a sentimental slow burn.
