Golden Child GAME CHANGER: In-Depth Album Review – Singing In The Rain

Golden Child - Game ChangerIt’s ‘Golden Child comeback’ time again, which means a track-by-track review of their new album, Game Changer! Check back each day of the week as I make my way through the ten new songs.

1. Game Changer (Intro) // 2. Ra Pam Pam // 3. Bottom Of The Ocean // 4. Fanfare // 5. Singing In The Rain // 6. Game // 7. Spell // 8. Out The Window // 9. Poppin’ // 10. That Feeling // 11. I Know

Singing In The Rain (Joochan & Bomin)

Based upon genre alone, Singing In The Rain was always going to be a low point for me on Game Changer. I’m simply not a fan of this jazzy coffeehouse style. I appreciate what it accomplishes and understand why others would flock to it, but it’s just not the energy I prefer in pop music.

However, I’m all for Rain’s unit pairing! Joochan is probably my favorite idol vocalist of this generation, and Bomin really thrives when his voice is pitched in a lower register. Their opposing tones compliment each other. In fact, the duo once covered Seventeen’s 9-TEEN to great success. Ever since then, I’ve been eager to hear their voices come together again.

Unsurprisingly, the two knock it out of the park. Even though I find Singing In The Rain quite boring as a song, it’s lovely to listen to. The opening rainfall effect immediately sets the mood. The midtempo instrumental paints a drowsy energy, peppered by twinkling keys and percussion that sounds like splashing puddles. The melody has an amiable lightness, skirting here and there without ever landing on a forceful refrain. Joochan and Bomin join together often in harmony, but there are plenty of moments that showcase their individual vocal colors as well. It all comes together to craft a vibe you could get lost in, vividly painting the scenery of a cozy, rain-soaked day.

I would have placed Singing In The Rain later in the track list so it didn’t feel as jarring on the heels of the bombastic Fanfare, but this is a very sweet song regardless.

  3. There are times in the afternoon when I put on an ambient sounds to work to, the kind that usually have rain or a babbling brook with some sort of soft instrumental whether is flute or soft synth wash or such. After sampling enough, I have settled on two or three particular ones, the one with a palm leaf that is hanging just so, the one with the little stream with stepping stones and decorative reedy plants, the old village path in the rain. Why those? Its some combo of just enough white noise with just the right soft sound that just works for me.

It’s like this song. It doesn’t do much for me. To me, the vocal is pleasant and competent. Its does it for Nick though. And that is perfectly fine.

  4. I like all kinds of jazz, and I think this is sweet and soft. And the song is solid. But I think there needs to be just a little more grit in the singing and arrangements. it can work being smooth, but not so polished. But, right now, it’s delightful to fall asleep to.

  8. Oooh this is delightful. It’s got the theremin which I’m discovering I really like and also just a sweet atmosphere. As a song, it’s not some addicting pop song but it’s one of those songs that I’d end up just putting on whenever I need some space to fill while doing some stuff. Inoffensive and good for what it’s meant for.
