Mother (from Destiny – 2013)

Sometimes a song is more about sentiment than melody or production. It’s hard not to fall for an ode to moms, no matter how treacly it might come across. Even so, Mother is one of Infinite’s less inspired ballads. The vocals are (of course) stunning, as is the gentle piano-led backing. But as effective as any Infinite ballad is, there’s something just a bit too earnest about the song’s insistent melodrama. It risks coming across as “a very special Infinite song” rather than an engaging piece of music in its own right. With that said, I can’t say I’m completely immune to its mawkish charms.
