In honor of the release of Infinite’s sixth mini-album, Infinite Only, I’ll be taking an in-depth look at each track. Every day this week, I’ll review one song, working through the album in chronological order.

It’s a common request from longtime Infinite fans that the group work with Sweetune again. That’s nothing against Rphabet or any other current collaborators, but Sweetune were the team who built Infinite’s sound. It’s natural to want them to pair up again — even if it’s only for a b-side.

Of all the tracks on Infinite Only, One Day feels the most like classic Sweetune Infinite, which is ironic because it was actually composed by one half of Rphabet. But the song sounds nothing like the group’s darker releases. Instead, we’re treated to an addictive piece of midtempo pop fluff. The song has a soft rock feel, similar to the material their leader Sungkyu released on his first solo album. From the outset, the verses chug with a brilliant mixture of guitar and synth, highlighted by the pitch perfect supporting vocals, which give the melody a warmly anthemic heft. Smartly, this is contrasted by the hip-hop pre-chorus that adds some needed edge to help ground an otherwise wistful track.

One Day‘s central hook is classic Infinite, allowing Sungkyu and Woohyun to do their thing — imbuing each note with the passion and commitment needed to steer clear of total cheesiness. That said, the vocal highlight actually comes in the song’s bridge, where L is allowed to pull off a cresting power note that brings us into the final chorus. All in all, it’s the kind of song that feels completely nostalgic in the very best way.
