Toki (from Air – 2017)
As one of only three new tracks released in 2017, the Japanese Toki more strongly represents current tastes in j-pop than Infinite’s own music. The funk-driven instrumental pulses with addictive energy, but the melody never quite finds a hook that sticks. Making matters worse, the arrangement doesn’t favor Infinite’s strengths. For a group with such incredible vocals, they often sound strained here. Perhaps it’s due to the track’s complete overstuffing of elements. There’s rarely time to breathe, for either the performers or the listener. It’s one of Infinite’s messiest recordings, and a rare miss.
