Enough of you asked for it, and who am I to deny? It’s time to dive deep into SHINee’s long-awaited comeback album Don’t Call Me, track-by-track.

MARRY YOU
Fans were treated to a preview of Marry You at the end of last month. And though it didn’t really point toward the album’s eventual sound, it reaffirmed the strength of SHINee’s vocals. To me, this kind of song feels more like a palette cleanser than a highlight, and because of this I’m surprised it’s placed so early in Don’t Call Me’s running order. It’s a perfectly satisfying mid-tempo – even groovy at times – but far from the album’s best track.
Marry You’s highlight is its soulful chorus. I love the tug of the melody, as if SHINee’s voices are being pulled upward by some outside force. It’s incredibly smooth, but a sense of tension keeps it interesting. Unfortunately, I tend to find any song about marriage relentlessly sappy, which makes Marry You difficult to fully embrace. What can I say? I guess I’m not the sentimental type.
Still, there’s no arguing with that knockout vocal blend. SHINee’s falsetto is layered for maximum effect, and the result will steal your breath. And even though there’s not much to the song beyond that (the verses are pretty forgettable), this irresistible glide makes for a thrilling centerpiece that brings Marry You‘s concept to life.

To me, the big issue is the instrumental and the sort off, not for me lyrics. Give it a standard R&B beat, and I think I’d love it!

It’s pretty alright for me, and seems kind of underwhelming to all the masterpieces surrounding it…..
But seriously, This album is getting better and better with each and every listen!

The verses are almost non events, the chorus is alright, the vocals are great,
I hear you on the sappiness of “Marry me” type songs. Every boy band and kpop group has one of these in the ouevre at some point. For this song except for the lyrics, the music doesn’t quite commit to full sappiness. It is neither a slow jam nor a more innocent old R&B love song, like this one.

I thoroughly dislike sappy ‘wedding’ songs (keep Ed Sheeran’s Perfect or Thinking Out Loud far away from me please!) but I have nothing against songs about marriage per se.
I can’t understand most of the lyrics and maybe that’s why I don’t think this is sappy. It’s sugary and light on a gentle groove. Their vocals are so sweet that it makes me want to melt and condensate into the atmosphere, gently floating up to the sky carried by those pretty falsetto layers.
Yes, I know boy bands all have these proposal type songs addressed to a conveniently self-insertable ‘you’. I will admit it: I’m too biased to be cynical about this one. Despite knowing better, SHINee can still make my heart flutter.

Oh good, I’m not the only person who balks at marriage songs. When I started listening to that preview, I thought, man, unless someone gets murdered on the way to the altar, this song is not gonna be for me.

“Palatte cleanser” is a good way to describe this one. It’s like a sorbet in a fancy meal, light and sweet.
I think their airy delivery of the chorus helps me accept the sudden proposal lyrics, like it’s genuine but not taking itself too seriously. If they were belting out “girl I wanna marry you” in a ballad I’d be more turned off.

This is exactly it! I was having a hard time articulating why it didn’t feel sappy to me, and your description is spot on. Light and sweet indeed, this is not a passionate proclamation of undying love and it’s all the better for it.
