Chocolate Love (from Chocolate Love – 2009)
Released by both f(x) and Girls’ Generation with different themes and arrangements, this “electro-pop” version of Chocolate Love is more suited to my personal taste. It comes across like many of SM’s girl group tracks of its era, lurching forward on a robotic groove that’s softened by the group’s layered vocals. It’s a brittle piece of dance pop — kind of cold and aloof. There’s not a ton of variation in the melody either, though the chorus employs a robust arrangement to give it extra oomph. With that said, my favorite element of Chocolate Love is its insistent stabs of distorted rock guitar. This instrumental touch gives the entire track a satisfyingly crunchy texture.
