K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – You Are My Destiny (Luna & Krystal)

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

You Are My Destiny (Luna & Krystal) (from Chu – 2009)

Previewing the sentimental style they’d bring to many OST releases, You Are My Destiny is a standard K-ballad performed by two powerhouse vocalists. In that regard, it’s an enjoyable showcase for their skill. Yet, the song itself is pretty standard fare. The strings swell in all the expected places, the beat feels tailor-made for slow, rhythmic swaying and the track grows more emotional as it goes. Its best moments bring Luna and Krystal together for powerful spikes of drama, culminating in a series of power notes that will feel familiar to any fan of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston – among other 90’s divas.

  1. I can totally hear early 90s Mariah in Luna’s voice here, yes!

(PD. Super off-topic, but with all this best-of-year lists frenzy, I’ve been revisiting some of my favorite 2020 pop albums, and I really think you’d enjoy “What’s Your Pleasure” by Jessie Ware, Nick! Specially its title track, which has a synth riff for the ages.)
