With over 2,300 songs on my iPhone’s “K-Pop Singles” playlist, I thought it would be fun to add a bit of unpredictability to my song review posts. So as a result, we have the “Random Shuffle Review” feature.

The rules are simple. I fire up my playlist, press “shuffle,” and whatever song plays first gets the full Bias List treatment!

Year Released: 2012

It may seem strange now, but there was a time that Girls’ Generation were releasing singles one after another without room to breathe in between. This prolific period was at its peak between 2010-2013, when the group were balancing incredibly successful Korean and Japanese careers. Nearly a month went by without new music of some sort, and unlike many k-pop groups, their output was remarkably consistent between both markets.

Flower Power was the final single to be released from their second Japanese album, Girls & Peace, and ostensibly led the album campaign. It typifies the upbeat, polished style that makes their Japanese discography arguably stronger than most of their Korean work. 2012 was the year of electro-pop, and Flower Power‘s trance-like beat gives the girls a pulsating playground to sink their teeth into. Its verses are a catchy mix of staccato vocals and playful rap, expertly melding the group’s cute and sexy sides. The surging chorus is a bit offbeat, with its mix of Japanese and English lyrics, but it’s driven by an aggressive electro assault that gives the track some edge. It’s not quite the strongest weapon in Girls’ Generation’s Japanese arsenal (Paparazzi says hi), but its unapologetic dancefloor drive has proven to stand the test of time.
