With over 2,300 songs on my iPhone’s “K-Pop Singles” playlist, I thought it would be fun to add a bit of unpredictability to my song review posts. So as a result, we have the brand new “Random Shuffle Review” feature.
The rules are simple. I fire up my playlist, press “shuffle,” and whatever song plays first gets the full Bias List treatment!

Back when Super Fly (날라리) was released, this brand of trap-influenced hip-hop hype song was still pretty new to k-pop. Monsta X and BTS had both scored hits with similar sounds, but 24K had already cycled through a few personas before jumping on this particular trend. Future singles would see them hitting a snag as their production overtook any sense of melody, and Super Fly definitely opens the door for this problematic transformation. But even though it may not be my favorite iteration of the 24K sound, it’s an unusual standout within their discography.
Super Fly opens with a now-familiar blend of skittering beats and klaxon synth before moving into a shout-along hook perched over walls of distortion. It’s all a bit much on first listen, but the song finds its footing as it moves into its playground-taunt of a melody. Percussion is all over the place here, but I love when it settles on a more straightforward beat during the electric-guitar fueled pre-chorus. Super Fly has a lot going on — maybe too much. The polished funk of its SHINee-esque bridge points at what could have been a more nuanced composition. It’s not a song for every moment, but if you’re in the mood for something bombastic and aggressive, its anything-goes energy kind of works.

Oh this series is gonna be fun. How often will you do these? Whenever you’re bored/there’s a lack of new songs to review?

Yes and yes!
I’m hoping for this to become a regular feature. There’s certainly enough material to warrant it!

Love this new idea. Definitely would love to see your opinions on some older songs. Is this just going to be for songs that didn’t make it to the new iteration of the site?

Yeah, I don’t currently plan to revisit any songs I’ve already written about on this site, though it would be interesting to see how (or if) my thoughts have changed!
