K-Pop Producer Spotlight: 13 (Score & Megatone)

If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering pop music for over a decade, it’s that songwriters and collaborators are just as important as the artists themselves. Though they often work behind the scenes, this feature is a chance to shine the light on some of K-pop’s most innovative and accomplished producers and composers.

13 (SCORE & MEGATONE)

Score & Megatone

Years active: 2013-present

Associated Acts: GFriend, Golden Child, JO1, Block B, Produce 101 franchise

Their sound: Quite varied, though many of their best songs highlight dynamic percussion and powerful vocal sections. Bass guitar also seems to be a focus, along with robust choruses.

Why you should love them: The crew from 13 have a particular connection with the Produce franchise (as well as other MNET endeavors), and their songs are often highlights of those series. They’ve been on a real streak lately, producing or co-producing Taemin’s Criminal, Golden Child’s Burn It and JO1’s Born To Be Wild. That’s three modern classics in a row! They’ve also worked extensively with GFriend, delivering a handful of strong b-sides. They have a great ear for a melody, and their production is always crisp and big and emphasizes exciting vocal arrangements.

Examples of their best work:
