K-Pop Producer Spotlight: Code 9

If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering pop music for over a decade, it’s that songwriters and collaborators are just as important as the artists themselves. Though they often work behind the scenes, this feature is a chance to shine the light on some of k-pop’s most innovative and accomplished producers and composers.

CODE 9

Years active: 2014-present

Associated Acts: Astro, Spectrum, N.Tic, MXM, The Boyz, Weki Meki, 100%

Their sound: Robust, synth-heavy instrumentals that blend retro influences with current trends. High tempo beats with blissful builds, often incorporating touches of electric guitar.

Why you should love them: Though they’ve been producing work for K-pop acts since 2014, Code 9 are just now starting to flesh out their discography with a steadier stream of releases. They had their hands in composing Produce 101‘s gargantuan season two theme song, but on their own the duo is just as compelling. Their polished, upbeat work reminds me a bit of Sweetune, and I love the bright synth textures that they choose. I’m a sucker for production teams who have a signature sound, and Code 9 are beginning to solidify that for themselves. I predict big things in the future.

Examples of their best work:

  1. THat track from 100%, this is so sweetune !
I really like their work but the only things missing for me are those layered voices and harmonies + back grown instrumentals. But yeah their work are actually very good!

    • It’s funny, before I was able to confirm that the 100% song was a Code 9 production, I was certain it was Sweetune. They definitely share some of the same musical hallmarks.
