If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering pop music for over a decade, it’s that songwriters and collaborators are just as important as the artists themselves. Though they often work behind the scenes, this feature is a chance to shine the light on some of k-pop’s most innovative and accomplished producers and composers.
LEEZ
Years active: 2017-present
Associated Acts: Dreamcatcher, ATEEZ, Infinite, Golden Child, A.C.E, KARD
His sound: Heavy rock influence, paired with aggressively textured electronic touches. Big, anthemic choruses, powered by energetic riffs and soaring vocal moments.
Why you should love him: Most often working with producing partner Ollounder, LEEZ is part of a new crop of young composers with incredible potential. He’s steered most of Dreamcatcher’s work, establishing a heavy rock sound that blends with K-pop’s dance-pop framework remarkably well. Though still early in his career, LEEZ has already begun branching out. His ability to pinball between diverse styles seems unlimited, as evidenced on newly-debuted rookie ATEEZ’s diverse mini album. Things promise to get even bigger and better from here, so jump on board early!
Examples of his best work:
Leez is becoming a new favorite. Perhaps even a new #3, after Sweetune and Iggy/Youngbae

You can’t just shaft Yoo Youngjin like that 😉

Oh shoot! HOW COULD I? Yoo Youngjin is still my lord and savior but he refuses to take prominent roles on newer songs!!! He’s always stuck as like the seventh composer credit on NCT songs these days, RIP.

I know. It’s so annoying. I like that he seems to be involved in so many of SM’s songs, but I bet it’s in more of an executive producer, finalizing-an-already-written-track kind of role. He needs to be the sole producer to really shine.

It’s great to read posts on the upcoming producers, writers, etc. emerging in South Korea. I’m not familiar with the groups or names you mentioned, but I enjoyed watching the Ateez MV.
