If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering pop music for over a decade, it’s that songwriters and collaborators are just as important as the artists themselves. Though they often work behind the scenes, this feature is a chance to shine the light on some of k-pop’s most innovative and accomplished producers and composers.
PDOGG
Years active: 2007-present
Associated Acts: BTS, Glam, Jo Kwon, 2AM
His sound: Rooted in hip-hop, but incorporating a diverse blend of balladry, EDM and pop. Largely trend-focused, with an emphasis on beat and moody, r&b-influenced melodies.
Why you should love him: Few of the producers featured on this site can be tied so closely to a specific artist. Though Pdogg began his career working with a number of idol groups and balladeers, his material has gone exclusively to BTS since their debut in 2013. It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that there would be no BTS discography without him. At the very least, their revered singles run would sound a lot different. When Pdogg eventually branches out to other acts, it’ll be interesting to see how or if his sound changes. For now, his deft touch is forever entwined with a massively successful catalog of songs, loved the world over.

*mock offence*: you can’t very well bring up the existence of Glam and then NOT mention “In Front of The Mirror,” which a 10/10 song, and definitely one of the best things pdogg has ever collaborated on. I am flabbergasted!
In all seriousness, I was scrolling through his page on MelOn just now, and I’m surprised at how widespread his credits are pre-BTS. I’m actually quite curious as to how Bang Si Hyuk and P-dogg would sound on a girl group track in 2019, considering how they’ve both made some very un-BTS songs in the past. Learning Bang Si Hyuk was behind T-ara’s “Like The First Time” was definitely a shock!
