If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering pop music for over a decade, it’s that songwriters and collaborators are just as important as the artists themselves. Though they often work behind the scenes, this feature is a chance to shine the light on some of k-pop’s most innovative and accomplished producers and composers.
Sweetch
Years active: 2011-present
Associated Acts: Infinite, Lovelyz, The Unit, UP10TION, Kim Tae Woo, LOONA
His sound: Soaring torch ballads with lofty string arrangements, and funky dance pop with retro vibes and a melodic focus.
Why you should love him: In a break from most producers I feature on this segment, Sweetch is probably best known for his ballads. They carry a gentle touch, but are buoyed by ornate arrangements with symphonic influences. Surprisingly, he’s just as gifted at crafting uptempo material, giving UP10TION their best single and providing a few of the highlights from KBS’s The Unit series. Compared to bigger names in the industry, his discography is still relatively small. However, his work for Woollim Entertainment acts alone make him worthy of attention.
