K-Pop Producer Spotlight: ZigZag Note

If there’s anything I’ve learned from covering pop music for over a decade, it’s that songwriters and collaborators are just as important as the artists themselves. Though they often work behind the scenes, this feature is a chance to shine the light on some of k-pop’s most innovative and accomplished producers and composers.

ZigZag Note

Years active: 2011-present

Associated Acts: Rainbow, Apink, MyName, Gfriend, U-Kiss

Their sound: Bright, sugary pop sound with big, melodic choruses. Heavy use of synthesizer and strings, and simple, repeated beats.

Why you should love them: Though they haven’t had a chance to produce many title tracks for established artists, their work has frequently appeared as strong b-sides. When I see their name come up in an album’s credits, I know I’m getting an addictive pop melody, free from the trendiness that impacts many others’ output. Though their work for girl groups can sometimes get a bit cutesy and saccharine, they’ve given us some absolutely amazing album tracks from underrated boy groups. It feels like they’re one massive title track away from becoming one of the biggest names in k-pop producing. They just need that break.
