There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.

There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.

BTS – Look Here (2014)

Look Here arrived long before BTS were a world-conquering force. It has the scrappy energy of their debut year, tethered to a trendy funk beat that borrows liberally from the sound of popular hits like Thicke’s Blurred Lines and Daft Punk’s Get Lucky. I find the bassline and guitar combination to be incredibly groovy, especially when the instrumental swerves into the minimalist post-chorus, which is buttressed by an immensely satisfying harmonic vocal flourish. The track is lively and loose, with a timeless appeal that stands apart from most of BTS’s work. If ever there was a BTS backyard BBQ song, this would be it.
