There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.
There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.

SHINee – Dazzling Girl (2012)
This Japanese single was released in October of 2012, but I’ve always considered it to be a summer track. SHINee have plenty of funk-driven, upbeat material in their arsenal, but Dazzling Girl harnesses such ebullient energy that it practically conjures sunshine and optimism. It also happens to be an absolute sledgehammer of a dance track, pounding forward on a brilliant electro beat that climaxes in a sweeping, vocal-rich chorus that previewed the incredible 2013 work the group was about to unveil. Few K-pop groups have delivered J-pop material as strong as this.

Loving all the SHINee on your summer lists! Their Jpop output especially has no shortage of fun, sunny tracks (heck, they have one called Sunny Day Hero) that are perfect for summertime.

Shinee were absolute monsters from late 2012 through 2013. They released 3 LPs, 1 EP and a repackage — across two different languages. It’s probably the greatest 15 month stretch by any group in the history of K pop. There are so many great songs off of “Boys Meet U” that are simply forgotten because it was a Japanese release. Password, Dazzling Girl, Breaking News, Burning Up, etc. They’re all incredible tracks. I can’t wait for Key, Minho and Onew to finish their military service so we can get new material!

My only Shawol regret is getting into them in early 2014, aka right AFTER they’d finished up that incredible run you described. It did however leave a lot of highly excellent material for me to consume as my introduction to the group.
The wait also felt long before they finally returned with View, but it made it all the more impactful for me as my first comeback.
