There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.
There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.
So, get ready for a summer of K-pop on The Bias List!

BESTie – Hot Baby (2014)
Bestie always felt like Sistar’s younger sisters – especially when it came to their summer tracks. Their vocal style echoed the airy appeal of songs like Touch My Body and Shake It, with Hot Baby (핫 베이비) in particular feeling like part of the same discography. And in many cases, that’s exactly the case. Like those songs, Hot Baby is a Duble Sidekick production, and nobody does summer like Duble Sidekick. Its verses are a bit of a slow-burn, but once that pre-chorus hits (with its thrilling, vocal-adlib launch into the chorus), resistance is futile. The brass-kissed hook is pure bliss, gliding along an effortlessly breezy melody.

Hot Baby will always be a summer anthem to me. Bestie had so much potential, it’s really sad to see the group didn’t grow as much as they could’ve.

There’s criminally underrated groups and then there’s BESTie! I ADORED them – both of their compiled mini album had nothing but songs that were formerly titles or songs that COULD have been – and it genuinely haunts me that due to Dayhe having an injury their 2016 comeback was delayed until it was just cancelled and we never got to see them together as a group again. Truly, my heart aches over it because they PLENTY of life left in them but their company focused on their boy group at the time instead. I try to follow Uji at least but can’t help wondering how far they could’ve gone if they too went viral like their contemporaries (and former group mates) EXID

They did Nature’s newest single album, but yeah… it’s producers like them and Sweetune that are really missed in this current K-pop generation.
