Summer of K-Pop

SUMMER OF K-POP: Henry – Holiday

There are few things I enjoy more than a great summertime song. They’re bright, they’re exciting, and they remind me of my favorite time of the year.

There’s no telling what this summer in K-pop will bring, but over the next few weeks I’ll be flashing back each day, showcasing a highlight from past summers. The rules are simple: I fire up my carefully compiled “K-pop summer” playlist, hit ‘shuffle,’ and if the song that pops up hasn’t already been featured on the site, it gets a post and mini-review of its own.

So, get ready for a summer of K-pop on The Bias List!

Henry – Holiday (2013)

Before Henry went all acoustic-r&b artiste, he delivered some great, lightweight pop fluff – and occasionally even crafted a K-pop classic. Holiday isn’t all that notable in the grand scheme of things, but that’s not necessarily bad. It’s the kind of carefree dance track that doesn’t require much from its listener, conjuring a pleasant groove and joyful, singalong hook. It’s very Western in its approach, but that’s a solid match for Henry’s performance style. It’s kind of “One Direction meets K-pop,” which wasn’t unusual at the time. Now, if he could have shoehorned some of his trademark violin in there somehow, we might be having a different conversation entirely!

    • Not sure if that’s possible since they don’t have enough tracks, so I’ll just share my rough draft right here:

      1. Thank U Very Much
      2. Love Options
      3. I Need You
      4. Hot Baby
      5. Excuse Me
      6. Pitapat

And… I love every single one of those tracks (though I love Pitapat a little less…)

        • To be honest, I’m not a big fan of JYJ’s music, despite being a huge fan of all involved. So, my ranking has more to do with Sweetune than them!

          1. Only One
          2. Get Out
          3. Wake Me Tonight
          4. Back Seat
          5. In Heaven
          6. Ayy Girl

Of these, Only One and Get Out are heads and tails above the others imo.
