Reviewing Every KIS-MY-FT2 Single: Ki.Su.U.Ma.I (Kiss Your Mind)

Kiss Your MindIn honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.

Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!

Ki.Su.U.Ma.I (Kiss Your Mind) (2013)

For me, this is where Kis-My-Ft2’s singles run starts to get a little more inconsistent – at least for a year or two. They’d eventually rebound in a major way. Of all the singles from this era, Kiss Your Mind is not a personal favorite. It’s a bit shouty for me, turning the intensity up to eleven and never really taking a moment to breathe. I’ve come around to it with time (especially in a live setting), but I still don’t seek it out on its own.

I do appreciate Kiss Your Mind’s sheer confidence. It opens in full glory, delivering its chorus right off the bat. I also enjoy the rapped verses, which pull in some of the rock influences that often drive the group’s sound. There’s a lot going on in this track… definitely no empty or wasted space.

While I’m a little hesitant on the song, the music video is a ton of fun. It’s quirky and cheesy in the classic Kisumai way and includes some of their most iconic imagery (the lip-shaped hair styles, the ‘stacked heads’ choreo at the opening). If nothing else, you will definitely be entertained!

  1. Hey Nick. Sorry for the unrelated question, but I have a question that’s been bugging me from the first time I ever read your blog. It’s regarding your ‘bias’ score from your reviews. I wanted to know if that score is related to how much you like the group or your opinion on the genre/type of the song. I’m sorry for asking but I am really curious lol.
Anyways, I love your blog, it is great. Cheers.

P.S: I’m sorry if the question wasn’t very clear, English is not my first language.

    • It’s a little of both. A group I’m biased toward can elevate a song I’m not crazy about. And, a group I usually don’t care for can impress me by tackling a genre or sound I’m biased toward.

Mostly, it’s a space to give me some wiggle room when it comes to calculating the final rating.

  2. What’s going on in this music video? I also wish white people weren’t the only non asians that appear frequently in Kpop and Jpop videos

  3. This song feels like SNSD’s Holiday. It’s not one of the best from the group best still a good example of their sound

  4. I’m just commenting to confess that when I first heard the name ‘Kis-My-Ft-2’ I totally thought it meant ‘Kiss My Foot Too’ (I did find out what it stands for much later!) and so when I read the title of this song being ‘Kiss Your Mind’ I was so confused as to when they switched from ‘foot’ to ‘mind’…

  5. A bit frantic for sure, It’s also a bit gimmicky and It’s my least favorite song of theirs yet, but I really like this one! Which should say enough about my feelings regarding Kis-my-ft2’s impeccable discography.
Just a notice: Both Shake It Up and Ai No Beat have grown on me tremendously, both are extremely fantastic songs!
