In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.
Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!
Hikari no Signal (2014)
It’s hard to dislike a song with Hikari no Signal’s energy. It’s just so festive and cheerful. With that said, I’ve always felt there were other groups in Johnny’s better-suited to this “festive and cheerful” schtick. (Okay, okay… I’ll eat my words when Yes! I Scream comes around in a few days’ time…)
At any rate, this is a nice midtempo with a satisfying sense of lift. It’s a sound J-pop does so well and most other music markets ignore entirely. The instrumental has great fullness – some brass here, some strings there – that buoys the melodies and urges those celebratory vibes along. This always works well with the unison style of singing Johnny’s tends to prefer. Hikari no Signal’s chorus is particularly nice, and I love the weird, wonky breakdown right before the finale. The single is also home to an incredible b-side in the form of Zutto (You Are My Everything). The guys have recently been performing this hidden gem more often and it works so well in a concert setting.
As for the video… oh dear, those jackets. I actually own an LP-sized version of this single with the fashion in full-blown glory. Do they have some connection with the Doraemon anime Hikari no Signal soundtracks? Whatever the case, the look is not flattering.

Speaking of J-Pop LPs, where do you purchase them? I have tried a few places, but they tend to be very expensive.

Apart from a few releases, I mostly by used from either auction websites or amazon japan. You have to use a proxy service, though. Haha I guess I’m kind of dedicated! 😅

Do you mind if I ask which sites do you use for auctions? I am still pretty new to album-buying lol.

When I first started, I used Zenmarket which offers proxy shopping through Yahoo auctions. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but they have a lot of FAQs and tutorials to help.
For new items, I’ve been pleased with both cdjapan and amazon japan.

I fell in love with this song when I watched the Doraemon movie probably 2 or 3 months ago. It is one of those comfort songs. And yeah, the members’ jacket does not resemble anything in the movie. Though, the shirt’s red collar and the jacket’s blue-colored part with the pocket slightly resemble Doraemon himself with his red collar and blue body with the 4D pocket.

The song’s pleasant and hopeful and mainly, I keep waiting for these albums to hit streaming services…

Very wholesome, it’s cheesy for sure, but it’s very wholesome.
