In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.

Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!

3.6.5 (2014)

3.6.5 is the second track to be taken from the group’s Kis-My-Journey album. Of all their albums, I actually think this is the weakest. But, 3.6.5 is a great single. It’s a new sound for Kisumai, giving them a more jagged electro pop makeover.

The instrumental is very percussive, crafting a collage of sounds that feels constantly in flux. I love the little stabs of rhythm guitar and bursts of spiraling synths. When thinking of this song, my mind always goes to the word “brisk.” There’s a velocity to the production. It’s just short of being overstuffed, but never feels noisy or unfocused. The melody in the verses echoes this approach, weaving up and down as if being chased by itself. It all culminates in a quirky chorus that lifts the energy while building upon all the elements before it. I love how the instrumental drops out for the bridge, leaving us with the guys’ vocals alone.

The music video is a hoot, with Kisumai being chased by a bunch of salarymen (?) as they lip sync the track. I’m pretty sure this was a tie-up with some sort of beauty product, so I guess the crowd was after Kisumai for their clear skin or fresh breath or… something?
