In honor of Kis-My-Ft2’s complete videography being uploaded to YouTube (in edited form, of course…), I can’t resist writing about each single. To put this in context for Bias List readers, Kis-My-Ft2 (or Kisumai, as they’re often known) are my J-pop version of Infinite. That’s how much I love them and their discography.

Yet, I rarely write about them because finding online links to their music was so hard… until now!

Perfect World (2014)

I’m pretty sure Perfect World was the first Kis-My-Ft2 song I heard (and loved) all the way through. This feels weird because it’s definitely not one of their signature moments or even all that indicative of their overall sound. But, it is a very, very good song. I can see why it had me hooked.

When we talk about “good vibes” in a pop song, Perfect World fits that bill. It just makes you feel warm and cozy and relaxed. But, this never comes at the expense of dynamic songwriting. Perfect World boasts an anthemic melody, building and building during its verses until we hit the knockout chorus. The melody does that “snowballing” thing I love so much, where the momentum grows as it goes on. I love how the percussion slams in during the second half of the first chorus, only to come back with renewed intensity later in the song. This, alongside Kisumai’s unison vocals, creates a robust sound that makes Perfect World absolutely soar.

The video is laidback in a really fun way. The guys are chilling at a vacation house, having water fights and petting cute dogs and emoting for the camera. It’s so nice to see the natural lighting on this one. Like the song, it feels very comfortable.
